On April 22 (Friday), when International Earth Day is celebrated, the signing of the Paris Agreement will take place at the UN headquarters in New York, which aims to validate the global treaty to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as an emergency measure to slow down the process of global warming.<\/p>\n
The Agreement will only come into force with the confirmation of at least 55 countries, which account for at least 55% of global GHG emissions. More than 130 nations have confirmed that they will send their heads of state or legal representatives to the ceremony on the 22nd. The Minister of the Environment, Izabella Teixeira, is expected to be the Brazilian representative to sign the Agreement.<\/p>\n
With this, the targets contained in the voluntary commitment to reduce GHG emissions (INDC) become de facto commitments to the international community. The Brazilian targets, considered ambitious as a whole, include, for example, an increase of 23% in the presence of alternative renewable energy (such as wind and photovoltaic) in the national electricity grid and an effort to use electricity efficiently that results in 10% of energy conservation \u2014 all of this by 2030. Both commitments are the subject of two comprehensive studies that the CEBDS Leaders Council (CL) will launch next May, analyzing these challenges in detail.<\/p>\n
An economist with a vast track record as a negotiator for Brazil at the Conference of the Parties (COP) between 1997 and 2001 and as coordinator of the Brazilian Forum on Climate Change between 2001 and 2003, the president of the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), Marina Grossi, explains: \u201cthe commitments announced by Brazil require changes of great impact that will only be feasible if agreed upon with civil society and the productive sector.
