Launched last Saturday (7) by CEBDS<\/strong> and by Peru Sustainable<\/strong>The Latin American Business Declaration on the Amazon reinforces the commitment of the region's business sector to combating illegality and promoting a sustainable and inclusive development model in the rainforest.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document highlights the urgency of confronting illegal activities that threaten biodiversity and local communities, and proposes joint actions between governments, businesses, and civil society to protect the Amazon as a common heritage essential to global climate stability. Declaration of Latin American Companies on the Amazon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Amazon is home to 40% of the planet's tropical forests<\/strong>In a territory of 7 million km\u00b2<\/strong>of which 5.3 million km\u00b2 are forests<\/strong>protects more than 400 indigenous peoples<\/strong> It is 10% of global terrestrial biodiversity<\/strong>The water that flows through its rivers represents approximately 18% of all the fresh water that reaches the oceans<\/strong>with a daily discharge of 17 trillion tons<\/strong>Furthermore, the region is one of the largest carbon sinks on the planet<\/strong>, essential for maintaining the climate balance and water security of South America. It is also home to 40 to 50 million people<\/strong>including more than 400 indigenous peoples of immense cultural richness.<\/strong>according to United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Amazon is facing a challenge today. growing threat of illegal activities<\/strong> that compromise their integrity. In the last decade, more than 30% of deforestation in the Amazon region<\/strong> was associated with illegal logging<\/strong>; the illegal gold mining<\/strong> It contaminates rivers and soil with mercury, affecting the health of thousands of communities; and it is estimated that 60% of timber traded in some Amazonian countries<\/strong> have an illicit origin. These activities degrade biodiversity, weaken institutions, and violate the rights of local populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illegality also fuels criminal networks<\/strong> that generate violence, human trafficking, forced labor and social exclusion<\/strong>According to the UN, the Organized crime linked to illicit economies in the Amazon moves billions of dollars annually.<\/strong>, perpetuating cycles of poverty and insecurity in a territory that should be synonymous with life and opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This problem transcends national borders. International markets often buy without due diligence.<\/strong>, reinforcing illegal supply chains. By maintaining a constant demand for products of dubious origin, They directly contribute to the perpetuation of deforestation, environmental degradation, and illicit economies.<\/strong>In this context, the fight against organized and environmental crime \u2014 both in terms of supply and demand \u2014 must always respect the... national legislation<\/strong> and the multilateral institutions<\/strong>, like the World Trade Organization (WTO)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  5. To encourage public-private and multi-sectoral collaboration.<\/strong>, aware that the fight against illegality will only be effective if governments, businesses, civil society and indigenous peoples<\/strong> to work together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Defending the Amazon as a common heritage of Latin America and the world.<\/strong>, recognizing that their protection is indispensable for the fulfillment of global climate and sustainable development commitments<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

To call upon developed countries and international markets.<\/strong> to guarantee Clear rules for trade, traceability, and responsible consumption.<\/strong>recognizing that illegality cannot be sustained without external demand.
