The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) took advantage of the wave of Black Friday <\/em>to challenge society to rethink consumer habits. With art direction typical of retail, the organization used its social networks to run a pro-sustainability campaign. Using the motto \u201cThe planet is not for sale,\u201d the cards invite consumers to think twice before buying and to reduce waste production by 70%. The creation was by Ag\u00eancia Ig+.<\/p>\n

According to data from the portal Black Friday Sale<\/em>, in 2017 the date generated an increase of 73% in sales of cell phones and electronics compared to other normal Fridays. A study carried out by the United Nations University in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union showed that in the same year the global population produced 44.7 million tons of electronic waste. By 2021, this number is expected to grow by 17%. One of the greatest dangers of this type of waste is the contamination of soil, rivers and groundwater with heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Brazilian Society of Retail and Consumption (SBVC) released a Facebook survey in partnership with E-bit, which revealed that 80% of Brazilians intend to make purchases during this promotional period.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is excellent that the consumer waits for the Black Friday\u00a0<\/em>and other dates that are good for taking advantage of promotions. But this is only valid when the person really needs the product. Otherwise, unnecessary consumption, which usually happens on impulse, generates negative impacts on personal finances and the environment\u201d, argues Marina Grossi, president of CEBDS.<\/p>\n

  1. Before purchasing, carefully evaluate your needs. Avoid making a purchase just because the promotion seems attractive;<\/li>\n
  2. Don\u2019t buy something new if you can fix what you already have. Also consider buying second-hand products that are in good condition or still have a medium to long lifespan;<\/li>\n
  3. Avoid illegal deforestation: when buying furniture, check if the wood is certified;<\/li>\n
  4. Research and try to buy from brands and companies that are transparent in their production processes and that invest in technologies to reduce environmental impacts, such as GHG emissions and use of water resources;<\/li>\n
  5. Take eco-bags when you go shopping and, whenever possible, reject non-recyclable plastic bags.<\/li>\n<\/ol>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
