Carbon pricing: CPLC holds meeting and highlights CEBDS performance in report

The Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC), a World Bank initiative of which the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) is a strategic partner, carried out its second High Level Assembly Meeting, on April 20 in Washington, USA. The event brought together World Bank President Jim Yong Kim; International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director, Christine Lagarde;  the high-level leadership of 26 companies committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, government from 36 countries and 33 strategic partners from different parts of the world.

The president of CEBDS, Mrs. Marina Grossi also participated in the meeting and stressed that, in the current scenario, carbon pricing depends more on political stability than on technical issues. “It is companies that can give the necessary support to obtain this political stability. And, in this way, market decisions can be taken on a more realistic basis. “According to the president of CEBDS, the main messages of the meeting were” price it right “,” tax smart “and” do it now “.

During the event, CPLC launched its first report, the Carbon Pricing Leadership Report, in which CEBDS was highlighted. The publication “Carbon pricing: what the business sector needs to know to position itself“, developed by CEBDS in partnership with CDP and We Mean Business support, was one of more than 60 actions that has being undertaken by governments, companies and Institutions around the world in favor of adopting carbon pricing as a means of achieving compliance with greenhouse gas emission reduction targets as agreed at COP 21 in Paris.

“I hope by sharing these success stories we can inspire others to discover their own solutions and move fast and scale up to ultimately tackle climate change,” said World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, one of the leaders of the Coalition.

CEBDS’s actions in the carbon pricing agenda

With the commitment made by Brazil to implement a pricing mechanism by 2020, CEBDS has been working on the construction and diffusion of knowledge among its member companies, partners and society in general, as well as talking with the government about what are these mechanisms and which would be the best model for the country.

In 2015, CEBDS, in partnership with the CDP, supported by the Climate and Society Institute (ICS), launched its first guide on the subject with the objective of clarifying what is carbon pricing and expanding national knowledge on what has already been practiced around the world. In partnership with We Mean Business, the organization started to spread this debate in traditional media and social networks.

In the same year, CEBDS was invited to join the Steering Committee of the Partnership for Market Readiness (PMR) Brazil, an initiative of the World Bank coordinated by the Ministry of Finance.

The publication that was highlighted in the Carbon Pricing Leadership Report, was launched in 2016 during the COP22 in Marrakesh. The study addresses the effectiveness of carbon pricing in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, benefits to socioeconomic development, impacts on the competitiveness of different sectors and an overview of the mechanisms that have been adopted by countries around the world. The content of this publication was worked jointly with CEBDS’ member companies and partners during a workshop, also in 2016.
