CEBDS brings Talanoa Dialogue on Climate Change to Brazil

On October 19, Brazil will host a global edition of the Talanoa Dialogue on Climate Change. An analysis focusing on the Brazilian reality on the Special Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) about climate change scenarios will be presented. During this week, IPCC scientists and government delegations are working on the conclusion of this study, which shows what the world needs to do to limit global warming by 1.5° C above pre-industrial levels. It is speculated that this report will be the most critical and controversial on climate change in recent years.

One of the highlights of the event’s programming is the Paulo Artaxo’s speech, IPCC member, full professor at the Institute of Physics of USP and member of the coordination of the FAPESP Program of Research on Global Climate Change, which will discuss the most important points of the report that will be released globally next Monday, 8/10.

The event will take place in Rio de Janeiro, with the realization of the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS, in Portuguese) and co-organization of the Museum of Tomorrow, and the Institute for Development and Management (IDG). It is sponsored by Bradesco, World Bank Group, Itaú, Santander and Shell. Registration is free and can be done at www.cebds.org.

“The purpose of the Talanoa Dialogue in Rio will be to talk about the role of large companies in fulfilling the Paris Agreement, and to stimulate the participation of Brazilian society in the fight against climate change. We will also hear the Secretary of Climate Change and Forests of the Ministry of the Environment, Thiago Mendes”, says Marina Grossi, president of CEBDS.

What is Talanoa?

According to the tradition of Fiji people, decisions for a greater good must be made through an inclusive, participatory and transparent dialogue. This communication process is called Talanoa and it was adopted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
