Finally, Pyeongchang!
After almost 40 hours of travel, including two long flights and a final bus ride, we arrived in the city hosting the 12th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The COP, as we call the Conference of the Parties, is the main decision-making body on biodiversity within the United Nations. It is a large meeting, organized every two years, that brings together the official delegations of the 188 member countries of the Convention, as well as observers from non-party countries, experts, non-governmental organizations, international bodies, indigenous and traditional peoples' leaders, and the press.
CEBDS is participating as a member of the official Brazilian delegation. Along with me are representatives from several member companies, such as Petrobras, Natura, O Boticário, and Monsanto.
The first comment everyone makes upon arriving here is undoubtedly about the distance. Pyeongchang is a South Korean city located in the northeast of the country, approximately 200 kilometers from the capital, Seoul. The area is popular among Koreans who enjoy mountaineering and especially skiing. In four years, we will certainly hear more about Pyeongchang: the city was chosen by the Olympic Committee to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Tomorrow we will begin monitoring the Business Forum, a space for discussions specifically for the private sector, as well as official negotiations.
I hope you'll join us here!
