Side event at COP

  • Posted in 11/12/2014

Overcoming all the challenges over the last six months and adjusting to all the unpredictable variables, and therefore, beyond our control, we held our Side Event and, as the saying goes, the amendment turned out better than the Sonnet!

The high-level panel, led entirely by women, led a highly relevant discussion on the issue of climate change, addressing financing and energy efficiency, and attracted the attention of a diverse audience of participants, the vast majority of whom were Peruvian and foreign.

The Side Event Climate Finance: what are the challenges for the private sector raised a relevant discussion about the role of energy efficiency in the future supply of energy and in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the importance of ensuring access to existing financing lines, the need to emphasize the social value of carbon, and also the existence of other existing market instruments for the decarbonization of the economy, such as carbon pricing.

As a result of the joint work between CTClima and CTFin, Side Event launched the publication Unlocking Energy Efficiency Financing in Brazil: Financial and Non-Financial Solutions for Market Players This brought relevant information to the table, such as the fact that despite the country's energy efficiency potential (10GW) being equivalent to almost one Itaipu dam in 2022, and the existence of approximately R$$42 billion for energy efficiency projects, of which R$$400 million are dedicated lines, the country's investments in these projects correspond to only 30% of its potential! This does not even take into account the potential for increased fuel efficiency, which corresponds to 17% of the total oil consumed in 2012! In other words, we increased the energy supply, but without the environmental and social impacts of building large hydroelectric plants or the entire infrastructure for oil extraction.

This productive discussion was led by our president, Marina Grossi, our associate Tania Consentino, president of Schneider Electric for Latin America, and our partners Claire Tutenoit, director of Entreprises pour l'Environnement (our French CEBDS!) and Anne Bolle, director of Statkraft Carbon Invest. A high-level panel, formed entirely by women, discussed topics previously dominated by men!
