Second Letter from the Special Envoy of the Business Sector to COP30, Marina Grossi
Letter to the Business Sector – One Month Before COP30
“Dear all,
We're one month away from COP30, which will certainly be a historic milestone for Brazil and the world. Over the past few months, as Special Envoy for the Business Sector, I've witnessed an intense journey of dialogue and collective development, marked by unprecedented mobilization. In the spirit of collective action, we participated in several forums, such as New York Climate Week, which brought together over a thousand events and global leaders, reinforcing that the climate transition requires cooperative action at scale.
In recent months, it has become clear that solutions are within our reach, but achieving them at the necessary scale still depends on adequate and accessible resources in the countries and regions that need them most. It is necessary to direct more investment toward the energy transition in the Global South; create financial mechanisms that reduce risks and increase the predictability of low-carbon projects; harmonize carbon markets and standards; increase transparency in supply chains; invest in workforce training for the new economy; and value the bioeconomy, biofuels, and the regeneration of degraded areas as pillars of a new cycle of sustainable development. Equally important is strengthening effective, multilevel governance, with clear rules, capable of involving governments, businesses, communities, and civil society in the implementation of solutions.
These conclusions reinforce that there is no single solution, but rather a mosaic of complementary solutions, and the business sector has a central role in implementing them with speed and ambition.
A COP30 Action Agenda, built from thousands of contributions from around the world, will present the platform in Belém Granary of Solutions, which brings together success stories and scalable solutions aligned with Global Stocktake and the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Dozens of Solution Acceleration Plans These are maps with clear guidance for implementing the transition. The business sector will be at the forefront of many of these initiatives, demonstrating what it already does, making new commitments, and identifying what's needed to leverage these solutions and ensure their widespread adoption.
There are thematic areas where progress in creating convergences is crucial to accelerating decarbonization and generating concrete opportunities:
- Energy and Industry: Expanding renewable generation, modernizing power grids, using low-carbon hydrogen, producing low-emission steel and cement, and expanding sustainable fuels—ethanol, biodiesel, green diesel, and SAF. Integrating data centers, artificial intelligence, and digitalization with renewable energy and resilient infrastructure
- Transportation and Logistics: vehicle electrification, development of battery chains and charging infrastructure, mode replacement and increased logistics efficiency.
- Agriculture and Land Use: recovery of degraded areas, expansion of sustainable agricultural practices and reduction of agricultural emissions of methane and nitrous oxide (N₂O).
- Forests: reduction of deforestation and valorization of standing forests as economic and climate assets.
Advancing climate action also depends on means of implementationWe need innovative financial mechanisms, such as the Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF) — which is expected to be formally launched at COP30 and will offer annual payments to tropical countries that keep their forests standing — Payments for Environmental Services (PSA) and increased global financing, towards the goal of US$ 1.3 trillion per year.
Added to this is the challenge of involving the business sector more directly in climate adaptation efforts, especially in building resilient infrastructure and solutions that increase the capacity to respond to extreme events.
Brazil has been a protagonist not only politically — with the proactive, ambitious and inclusive direction of the COP30 Presidency — but also in business, with coalitions that are already showing concrete results, such as Brazil of Solutions, led by CEBDS, SBCOP30, and other platforms connecting innovation, finance, and sustainability. All of these efforts will be integrated into the Action Agenda platform.
Belém will be the stage to show the world that solutions exist and that they can be expanded and leveraged with the right policies, the necessary investments, and the dynamism of the private sector.
I invite the business sector to be present with proposals, commitments, and results, and with the necessary enthusiasm so that together we can make COP30 a historic milestone in the implementation of global decarbonization with justice, sustainability, and prosperity.
Yours sincerely,
Marina Grossi
Special Envoy of the Business Sector for COP30″
