Time to Scale Up Sustainable Food Systems

COP 30 inaugurates the Action Agenda and reignites the leading role of civil society. For PepsiCo, this is the moment to transform ambition into impact — with regenerative agriculture practices, clean energy innovation, and responsible water use that are already shaping the future of food in Brazil and the world.

A COP 30 It is born with a powerful symbolic legacy. By taking place in Brazilian Amazon, brings together two themes that are, in fact, inseparable: climate and biodiversityIt also marks the civil society's return to a leading role, after several editions in which the discussions seemed detached from real life. And it inaugurates the Action AgendaThis is an ambitious proposal from the COP 30 Presidency that invites governments, businesses, and individuals to implement, now, the solutions that the planet urgently needs.

At PepsiCoThis call resonates deeply. We believe it is time to act with courage and collaboration. The Action Agenda offers us a clear and shared path to accelerate the transformation. Among its six axes, one of them moves us in a special way: the Transformation of Agriculture and Food Systems — a theme that is both a global challenge and an extraordinary opportunity to regenerate the relationship between humankind and nature.

As an agribusiness company, building sustainable food systems is at the heart of our global strategy. PepsiCo Positive (pep+). We want the growth of our business to go hand in hand with the strengthening ecosystems and communities that surround us.

In recent years, we have worked intensively to reinventing our production chainsFrom farm to consumer's table, including the manufacturing process, always based on a circular economy model. Inspiring stories are emerging around the world, and I highlight some that are already a reality in Brazil.

  • Regenerative agriculture with a smaller carbon footprint: we begin In Brazil, in partnership with Yara, we are implementing the unprecedented use of fertilizers that will allow for a reduction of up to 40% in the carbon footprint of potato chip production with our partner farmers. Furthermore, we already encourage the use of biological pesticides that reduce dependence on synthetic inputs and improve soil health.
  • Technology and sustainability in the fields: Drones, sensors, and artificial intelligence monitor soil, moisture, and carbon, optimizing the use of natural resources and increasing productivity.
  • Renewable energy in the fields and factories: We encourage the use of solar energy and biomass by our partner producers, reducing costs and decarbonizing the supply chain. In the manufacturing process, the PepsiCo plant in Itu, in the interior of São Paulo, one of the largest in Latin America, has become a global benchmark for using renewable energy through biomethane throughout its food production. Solar thermal power plants have also been implemented in the units in Sete Lagoas/MG, Feira de Santana/BA, Jaboatão dos Guararapes/PE and Sorocaba/SP.
  • Water reuse: in Itu/SP and in Sete Lagoas/MG, The water used in production goes through a wastewater treatment system using patented technology with membrane bioreactors + reverse osmosis (MBR/RO), saving more than 20 million liters of water per month in both units.

None of this would be possible alone. We believe in the power of... collaboration and collective learningTherefore, we actively participate in Thematic Chamber of Agri-food Systems of CEBDS, which launched the Brazilian Business Commitment for Regenerative, Fair and Sustainable Agri-Food Systems, and we integrated the SB COP Food Systems Working Group, a coalition created by the CNI to support climate negotiations and unite the private sector around concrete goals.

The contributions presented by SB COP 30 point the way:

  • Adopt global and results-based metrics., to guide public policies and climate-smart agricultural practices;
  • Boosting productivity through inclusion.through innovation, technical assistance and training for small and medium-sized producers;
  • Creating new forms of financing and cooperation., which help farmers transition to more resilient and sustainable systems.

The movement has already begun, but it's time to... accelerate and scale upIt's time to make regenerative agriculture, agroforestry systems, and lower-carbon production an accessible reality for everyone.

At PepsiCo, we believe that Sustainability is synonymous with the future.And the future will only be prosperous if it is... fair, regenerative and sharedWe are putting the People and the planet at the heart of value creation..

COP 30 will undoubtedly be a historic milestone. But the true legacy will come from what we do together afterward—when we transform commitments into action, and action into lasting impact.
