Former Brazilian Chief Negotiator for Climate Change during RIO+20 will be president of COP30.
The Secretary of Climate, Energy and Environment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, André Corrêa do Lago, was chosen to preside over COP30, which will take place in Belém, Pará, in November of this year. The announcement was made this Tuesday (21) by President Lula, during a ministerial meeting. During the event, Ana Toni, Secretary of Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, was announced as Executive Director of the Conference.
As president of the Conference, Corrêa do Lago will be responsible for guiding the work, acting as a facilitator between all representatives of countries present at the event.
History with Sustainable Development
Working with sustainability since 2001, André Corrêa do Lago was Brazil's Chief Negotiator for Climate Change (2011-2013) and for Rio+20 (2011-2012).
Corrêa do Lago also has experience in international negotiations involving climate-related issues. The diplomat played an important role in recent COPs, especially in articulating Brazil's position during COP29, which took place last year in Baku, Azerbaijan.

CEBDS has acted as ambassador on multiple occasions
Last year, the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), promoted a meeting that brought together 23 executives from associated companies and the Secretary of Climate, Energy and Environment of Itamaraty, to discuss the role of the private sector in combating climate change in Brazil.
Among the meeting's agendas were the legacy that should be left by COP30 in the Amazon region, through sustainable infrastructure, and collaboration for the robustness of the NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution).
Also in 2024, CEBDS was invited by Corrêa do Lago to contribute further to the search for solutions for the decarbonization of five key sectors of the Brazilian economy: energy transition (oil), agribusiness, livestock, transportation and forests. One of the results of this invitation was the creation of a Coalition led by CEBDS, together with the CCR Group and Insper, to contribute to the strategy for reducing emissions in the transportation sector, providing subsidies for the government to formulate its specific policy for the area.
The Ambassador and the Secretary of Climate Change, Ana Toni, were present at the launch event, during New York Climate Week, of the Call to Action for more ambitious NDCs, which gathered the signatures of 55 companies in favor of the implementation of clear policies and the broad participation of the private sector in efforts to contain climate change.

Ana Toni will be the Executive Director of the event
The Secretary of Climate Change of the Ministry of the Environment, Ana Toni, was also announced as Executive Director of COP30. The economist has a PhD in Political Science and has a long history of involvement in the third sector.
Ana was Executive Director of the Climate and Society Institute – iCS (2015-2022), President of the Board of Greenpeace International (2010 to 2017), in addition to having been director of the Ford Foundation in Brazil between 2003 and 2011.

What is the role of the COP30 president?
Although the COP president is appointed by the host country, he does not act on behalf of the country, his main role being to guide the discussions and work that will be carried out at the conference.
Since the COP has almost 200 participating countries and the approval of guidelines depends on the unanimous agreement of all of them, the president and his team work to reconcile the points in order to move forward with the discussions. In this way, the president's dialogue should be with the entire world, aiming at the best alternatives for a general consensus.
