Action 2020 project guides WBCSD meeting in Türkiye

  • Posted in 09/11/2013

The project Action 2020 guided the debates, plenary sessions and working groups of the second edition of Liaison Delegate Meeting 2013 (LD Meeting), an annual meeting promoted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), held from November 4 to 8 in Istanbul, Turkey. CEBDS President Marina Grossi participated in the meeting, accompanied by CEBDS Thematic Chambers Coordinator for Biodiversity and Biotechnology and Sustainable Finance, Fernanda Gimenes, and Action 2020 Project Consultant Pablo Barros.

At a global level, the WBCSD is leading discussions and helping the business sector build solutions that are scalable and replicable for society’s main challenges. In total, nine priority areas have been defined that encompass social, environmental and financial issues. “We know that the planet is in crisis and that today there is no player that is leading the changes we want and that we design for a better future in 2050. Companies need to take on this role,” said Peter Bakker, president of the WBCSD.

This year, the LD Meeting Action 2020 brought together a record number of participants, with more than 500 representatives – including CEOs of companies from different regions of the world. “Because they play a fundamental role in the discussions and in the construction of solutions that are part of the Action 2020, the companies were empowered by the proposal and were willing to work together”, stated Marina Grossi.

One of the essential points for success in meeting the goals of the Action 2020 is the construction of partnerships. According to Pablo Barros, working in a network is key to the goals that the project intends to achieve. “Given the size and ambition of the project, partnerships are essential for business solutions to be successful, gain scale and be the result of an articulation not only of companies, but of several other relevant actors that need to be involved”, considered the consultant.

“At this moment, CEBDS is working on planning the adaptation of the Action 2020 for Brazil, which will involve member companies and work on business priorities and solutions,” said the president of CEBDS. The goal is to create, in line with the WBCSD, a clear action plan, with objectives, actions and indicators that help build a future where 9 billion people live well within the limits of the planet.
