The COP is drawing to a close, and negotiations are progressing more quickly in recent days. The document addressing business engagement was finalized yesterday, with relatively easy consensus among the parties. The final text sets out some commitments for countries and business sector representatives, especially regarding strengthening the role of the Global Platform on Business and Biodiversity, of which CEBDS is a part.
The document encourages countries to work together with companies and organizations to develop innovative products and support mechanisms for the Global Partnership and its national and regional initiatives, as well as to cooperate in the wider dissemination of reports on business efforts to contribute to the objectives of the CBD and the Aichi Targets. Furthermore, it encourages the promotion of public-private partnerships to foster the development and implementation of biodiversity strategies in the business sector, as well as capacity building.
On the other hand, the document encourages companies to analyze the impacts of business decisions and operations on biodiversity and ecosystem services, and to prepare action plans for integrating biodiversity into their operations. The inclusion of considerations related to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services in company reports is also encouraged, to ensure that the actions taken by companies, including the activities of their supply chains, are captured. Furthermore, the document makes an important mention of the need to increase the capacity building of senior management and suppliers on the benefits of biodiversity conservation and the impact of operations on ecosystem services. Finally, the document requests the active contribution of companies to the CBD's resource mobilization strategy to support the 2011-2020 Strategic Plan for achieving the Aichi Targets.
The approval of this document is very important for the next steps of the Global Business and Biodiversity Platform. Its development is a concrete sign of the growing understanding that companies need to play a key role in addressing the serious environmental problems we face, including biodiversity loss.
Businesses, governments, and civil society are mutually dependent on one another, and collaboration is essential to address challenges in the best possible way. Only in this way will we be able to achieve the ambitious goals set by international negotiations.
