Seminar discusses Urban Mobility

  • Posted in 27/01/2016

On January 27, Campinas hosted the seminar "The Challenges of Urban Mobility." The seminar was organized by the international organization World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), coordinated by the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) and the Municipal Development Company of Campinas (EMDEC), in partnership with WRI Brasil Sustainable Cities. The event brought together several experts who discussed topics related to urban mobility, focusing on sustainable solutions.

Among those present were the mayor of Campinas, Jonas Donizette; the Secretary of Transportation and president of Emdec, Carlos José Barreiro; Stephan Herbst, co-president of the WBCSD project; Paula Bisial, from the government of Buenos Aires; Ramon Victor Cesar, president of BHTrans; Adauto Farias, from SPTrans; Luis Antônio Lindau, director of WRI Brasil; Mário Batista, from Pirelli Brasil; Mónica Guerra Rocha, from CEBDS; representatives from the secretariats of Green Areas, Environment and Sustainable Development and Planning and Urban Development; among others present.

The presentations covered topics such as Sustainable Mobility, BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), shared bicycles, electric mobility and car-sharingSecretary Carlos Barreiro presented the partnership project between Emdec and the WBCSD and the municipality's Urban Mobility Plan. The seminar marks the conclusion of the Sustainable Mobility Project 2.0 (SMP 2.0), a partnership between Emdec and the WBCSD.

According to Mónica Guerra, coordinator of the CEBDS Mobility Chamber: "We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past; we need to prioritize and prioritize modes of transport. Quality planning requires considering the various stakeholders involved in a city, the union of the public and private sectors, and the population."

According to Carlos José Barreiro, Secretary of Transportation and President of Emdec, Campinas's Road Plan is being designed for the next 25 years. Barreiro presented Rapidão, the BRT system that will be implemented in the city, and emphasized: "An urban mobility problem doesn't have just one solution. A solution that seems good but is chosen incorrectly can harm future solutions. We are developing plans that allow us to look to the future."

Mayor Jonas Donizette celebrated the partnership with WBCSD and the opportunity to improve the quality of public transportation in Campinas from the user's perspective. "Anyone who works in the public sector knows that as important as implementing the idea is to think about it and discuss it with the population so that it can be positive for everyone. Many people were involved in achieving what we're achieving now. Major cities are discussing this issue, and Campinas is now one of them," he emphasized.

WBCSD

The WBCSD is an international organization led by CEOs of innovative companies, creating a sustainable future for business, society, and the environment. The organization develops the Sustainable Mobility Project 2.0 (SMP 2.0).

Only six cities worldwide are participating in the project. Campinas is the only one in the Americas, joining Lisbon (Portugal), Hamburg (Germany), Chengdu (China), Bangkok (Thailand), and Indore (India).

Emdec partnered with WBCSD in 2014, with the aim of studying robust Sustainable Mobility plans for the municipality.

Solutions

The studies identified actions to improve integration between different public transportation modes; improve current and future traffic conditions; and support the implementation of the BRT project.

Among the solutions proposed are: a feasibility study for the VLT (Light Rail Transit); cycle paths; a transport feeder system; an application for online bus schedules and routes; terminals with integrated services; improvements to bus stops; priority travel for public transport; a public bicycle system; bicycles integrated into the public transport system; carpooling; and a public car-sharing system.

The Sustainable Mobility Project 2.0 has been supporting the development of the city's Urban Mobility Plan. SMP 2.0 aims to analyze travel in the city over a ten-year horizon, coinciding with the Master Plan. Simultaneously, EMDEC is also developing the Road Plan, envisioning mobility for 25 years, that is, until 2040.
