Rio de Janeiro, October 5th. On October 19, Brazil will host a global edition of the Talanoa Dialogue on Climate Change. On that occasion, an analysis focusing on the Brazilian reality will be presented on the Special Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on climate change scenarios. This week, IPCC scientists and government delegations are working on completing this study, which shows what the world needs to do to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. It is speculated that this report will be the most critical and controversial on climate change in recent years.
One of the highlights of the event's program is the speech by Paulo Artaxo, member of the IPCC, full professor at the Institute of Physics at USP and member of the coordination team of the FAPESP Research Program on Global Climate Change, who will unfold the most important points of the report that will be released globally next Monday, October 8th.
The event will take place in Rio de Janeiro, organized by the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) and co-organized by the Museum of Tomorrow and the Institute for Development and Management (IDG). It is sponsored by Bradesco, the World Bank Group, Itaú, Santander and Shell. Registration is free and can be done on the website www.cebds.org.
“The purpose of the Talanoa Dialogue in Rio will be to discuss the role of large companies in complying with the Paris Agreement, in addition to encouraging the participation of Brazilian society in the fight against climate change. We will also hear from the Secretary of Climate Change and Forests of the Ministry of the Environment, Thiago Mendes,” says Marina Grossi, president of CEBDS.
What is Talanoa?
According to the tradition of the Fijian people, decisions for the greater good should be made through inclusive, participatory and transparent dialogue. This communication process is called Talanoa and was adopted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
