“How can you join forces and help fight climate change?” This question was posed to students from municipal schools in Rio de Janeiro as a challenge to produce content on environmental issues that affect society. The initiative is from CEBDS, in partnership with the Climate Reality Project – Brazil, and with support from the Center for Environmental Education, Municipal Secretariat for Conservation and Environment. The best works will be released on October 19th during the Talanoa Dialogue on Climate Change, a global event that will take place in Rio to discuss the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The document, released last Sunday (October 7th), was considered the most severe warning about the planet’s efforts to contain global warming.
“The IPCC report is alarming and calls for urgent acceleration of the changes we need to limit global warming to 1.5ºC. If we do not reach the targets, environmental disasters and food shortages will be inevitable. It is important for children to develop this awareness, which is why we proposed intensifying this dialogue in the classroom,” explains Marina Grossi, president of CEBDS.
The competition is aimed at students of all ages, regularly enrolled in Sustainable Municipal Schools in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The categories are: Drawing (up to 8 years old) and Writing (from 9 years old). The students who win first and second place in each category will receive a kit containing a game, an ecological book autographed by the author, tickets to a cultural attraction in Rio de Janeiro, a t-shirt, a straw and an ecological bottle.
Talanoa Climate Change Dialogue
According to the tradition of the Fijian people, decisions for the greater good should be made through inclusive, participatory and transparent dialogue. This communication process is called Talanoa and was adopted by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
On October 19, Brazil will host a global edition of the Talanoa Dialogue on Climate Change. On that occasion, an analysis focusing on the Brazilian reality will be presented on the Special Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on climate change scenarios, released last Sunday (7/10).
The event will take place in Rio de Janeiro, organized by the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) and co-organized by the Museum of Tomorrow and the Institute of Development and Management (IDG). Registration is free and can be done on the website www.cebds.org
