Business sector assessment of Climate Conference announcements

The president of CEBDS (Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development), Marina Grossi, assessed two important announcements for Brazil at COP 26:

“We started COP 26 with two important announcements for Brazil: the signing of the Forest Pledge (Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forest and Land Use) and the new targets for our NDC.

“Although both are important announcements, the reach of each of them must be evaluated differently.

“The signing of the Forest Pledge is a milestone in the history of climate governance and in the evolution of negotiations at the COP. Brazil’s accession to the framework opens up opportunities for our competitive advantages – which are nature-based solutions, especially forest preservation and restoration.

“The Commitment demonstrates the international community’s awareness that forests are an integral and inseparable part of the climate solution. CEBDS celebrates the signing of this Commitment by more than 100 countries, in line with our declaration against deforestation, the Business Movement for the Amazon, and congratulates Brazil on signing this milestone in climate governance that has brought forests to the center of the neutrality strategy.

“The new targets announced for our NDC (50% for reducing emissions by 2030 and neutralizing emissions by 2050) were undoubtedly a positive announcement. However, these new targets actually reflect an alignment with previous figures from Brazil. The difference at the current moment will be the detailing of the execution of these commitments with the sectoral targets and, mainly, the adoption of intermediate targets, a path that the world is following, due to the urgency of adopting these measures.

“CEBDS recognizes the important realignment brought about by the announcement and awaits details of the new goals, including the hope that new intermediate brands can still be adopted, in line with our Businessmen for the Climate manifesto.”
