Business sector gains platform for post-2015 agenda.

  • Posted in 22/10/2013

With the deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goals approaching in 2015, various actions are being developed to reach the targets. Within the business sector, the document “Architects of a better world”The initiative, which will be launched in Brazil on Tuesday the 22nd at the BM&F Bovespa headquarters in São Paulo, aims to foster discussions around the effective contribution of the business world to advancing the post-2015 development agenda. Conceived by the Global Compact, the initiative has the support of CEBDS (Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development) and GRI (Global Reporting Initiative).
The publication proposes a framework, respecting the principles of the United Nations, so that companies can contribute, in an unprecedented way, to global priorities such as climate change, water, food, women's empowerment, children's rights, decent work, and education. The document aims to help companies strengthen ties between the public and private sectors, in line with the commitment made by the Brazilian Network of the Global Compact at Rio+20, through the Charter of Commitments.
The publication describes the platform to be used by companies, which includes the following points to be taken into consideration: long-term business objectives are increasingly linked to the goals of the United Nations; corporate transparency; specific actions by each company in favor of sustainability should be leveraged through action platforms and partnerships; this entire movement should be based on social and/or governmental incentives.
Chaired by the UN, the publication launch will bring together executives and business representatives with leaders from civil society, governments, and the United Nations to unveil a new global architecture for corporate sustainability. Confirmed attendees include the global president of the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), Ernst Ligteringen; the president of the WBCSD (World Business Council for Sustainable Development), Peter Bakker; the president of the Brazilian Committee of the Global Compact, Jorge Soto; the president of CEBDS, Marina Grossi; and other leaders from government, the business sector, and civil society.
