What is COP16?

Focused exclusively on the preservation of biological diversity and sustainable development, the event is held biannually by the UN to discuss the issues of protecting global biodiversity. The 2024 edition is expected to be the largest to date, with around 23,000 people taking part. This year, expectations for the meeting revolve around the joint commitment made by member countries to conserve 30% of the planet's soils and oceans by 2030, financing for least developed countries, monitoring the progress of actions and exchanges between countries.

Private sector participation in the conference is also expected, with companies from Brazil and around the world joining in the debates on biodiversity preservation. Nature-Based Solutions Consultant at Suzano, Cecilia de Almeida believes that:

“The growing corporate interest in biodiversity issues reflects a significant shift in perceptions about the importance of sustainability, with companies recognizing that biodiversity conservation is essential for long-term economic viability and seeking innovative solutions for sustainable development.”
– Cecília de Almeida, Nature-Based Solutions Consultant at Suzano

The company is part of the CEBDS group that will follow the discussions in Cali, Colombia.

To participate in discussions on biodiversity and increasing private sector participation, at COP16 our delegation will represent 17 sectors of the Brazilian private sector:

Consumer Goods, Communication, Consulting, Cosmetics, Energy, Engineering, Finance and Development, Logistics, Mining, Pulp and Paper, Oil and Gas, Chemicals, Sanitation, Services, Tobacco, Telephony and Retail.
