Water security and sanitation under debate by the private sector

What is the role of the private sector in addressing global water security challenges? To discuss and present positive business outcomes that include water and sanitation management, the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), and the Global Compact Brazil Network will hold a plenary session on November 27th. water and business. The event is part of the program of Rio Water Week – an international conference that will bring together civil society, the academic community, companies and international organizations from November 26 to 29 to discuss challenges, public policies and technological solutions for water management and sanitation. The expected attendance is 2,000 people from Brazil and abroad.

O water and business is an unfolding of Water Business Day, held in March of this year during the World Water Forum in Brasília. The initiative is aligned with the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6), which aims to ensure the availability and management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. Oscar Cordeiro (National Water Agency – ANA), Jason Morrison (CEO Water Mandate), and Tom Williams (WBCSD) are some of the prominent names at the event, which will also feature representatives from the World Bank, FIRJAN, FIESP, Coca-Cola, Ambev, Nestlé, Philip Morris, Braskem and ECOLAB, ABCON/SINDCON, BRK Ambiental, AEGEA sanitation, Pezco do Brasil, and Águas do Brasil.

“We brought together representatives from large organizations so that society can learn about the actions of the private sector that contribute to water security and understand the legal or regulatory limitations that hinder eco-efficiency solutions. We will also talk about one of our proposals for the new government, which is the inclusion of the reuse of water from industrial processes in the National Sanitation Plan. The urgent need to expand sanitation in the country as a way of preventing diseases and improving infrastructure for generating business will be covered,” explains Marina Grossi, president of CEBDS.

During the water and business, CEBDS will launch an information hub on private sector water resource management. The digital platform, called Aquasfera, is the result of the Brazilian Business Commitment to Water Security, a document signed by more than 20 companies associated with CEBDS during the 8th World Water Forum, which took place for the first time in Brazil in March of this year.

Aquasfera will have an environment for monitoring compliance with targets, an exclusive integration space for companies, a news and events calendar area, and a space to publicize innovative projects and technologies that contribute to the evolution of water security in Brazil.
