The Viva Água movement (MVA) promotes water security and adaptation to climate change based on actions for the conservation and recovery of natural ecosystems, in addition to encouraging entrepreneurship with positive social and environmental impacts. Conceived by Fundação Grupo Boticário, the model involves multiple actors, with the opportunity to be replicated in any river basin in the country.
It started in 2019 in the Miringuava River Basin, one of the most strategic supply sources in Greater Curitiba. Located in São José dos Pinhais (PR), it supplies 600,000 people. From the dam under construction, the basin will supply almost the entire population and companies in the municipality, and will expand the surplus that is already generated today to neighboring cities.
Designed for 10 years, MVA Miringuava has the following goals by 2030:
• Preserve 1,500 hectares of natural areas through financial mechanisms
• Recover 650 hectares of strategic areas for water availability
• Support 30 businesses with a positive socio-environmental impact
• Convert 500 hectares to sustainable production
In 2021, the MVA was created for the Guanabara Bay Hydrographic Region – the result of the success of the Oásis Lab initiative, which, in 2019, brought together more than 100 strategic actors in the territory to co-create Nature-Based Solutions (SbN) for water security and resilience coastal marine. It is a region formed by 17 municipalities with more than 7 million people. The economic and industrial activities are of great proportions and the socio-environmental conditions of the surroundings are very challenging.
For the MVA Guanabara, the following goals were established until 2024:
• Consolidate a multisectoral movement for SbN actions in the region
• Create and strengthen a conservation business ecosystem in the region
• Accelerate 60 businesses with a positive socio-environmental impact
• Implement a financial mechanism, leveraging resources from other organizations
• Promote at least 20 biodiversity conservation initiatives in the territory
