CEBDS launches Vision 2050, a strategic study that outlines what the future will look like in terms of topics related to the ESG agenda

Document is the result of a year of work with contributions from companies, academia and civil society, totaling the involvement of more than four thousand people

Rio de Janeiro, March 25, 2021 – The Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) launched today a strategic study Vision 2050, which aims to bring an updated discussion of issues that began to be debated in 2012, when, on the eve of the Rio+20 conference, CEBDS, together with its associated companies, developed the study Visão Brasil 2050 – a new agenda for companies. The idea was to present the vision of a sustainable future and how it would be possible to achieve it.

Eight years later, CEBDS understood that it was time to update this vision, and began a process multistakeholder to update the 2050 Vision for Brazil. The new document, which will be launched on March 25th with a webinar (see below), is the result of a year of work with contributions from companies, academia and civil society, reaching more than four thousand people.

The objective of A Visão 2050 is to assess whether companies were on the right path, whether trends were verified, in addition to including new subjects that are now an inseparable part of the sustainability agenda. For this, eight priority themes were defined: People, Cities, Circular Economy, Water and Sanitation, Biodiversity, Food, Energy and Finance.

For Marina Grossi, president of CEBDS, more than seeking answers, it was time to ask the right questions, especially considering the challenging scenario of 2020. “That is why we questioned what led us to the multiple crises we faced, with the aim of pointing our compass towards a more sustainable and regenerative future. The pandemic anticipated situations that were already in the scenarios, such as the consequences of climate change and the indiscriminate use of biodiversity, and caused a change in the way we see the planet, highlighting the relationships of interdependence”, says Marina.

Vision 2050 points to a future in which life-giving elements occupy a central place in the economy (water, land, air, food, etc.). It also shows the current scenario, where we will be in 2030 and what needs to be done by 2050.

“We already see seeds of this future in the present, such as the rise of the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) aspects into business, stakeholder capitalism. But to be achieved it requires concrete action, especially in this decade of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals”, adds Marina Grossi.

Key takeaways from the study:

The goal of Vision 2050 is to have: “A regenerative and distributive economy in which the needs of all people are met without depleting the planet’s resources.”

To achieve this, there must be systemic transformations in our companies and in our society as a whole.

We need to create the foundations for the transition from shareholder capitalism, based on profit capitalism and based on the risk-return binomial, to stakeholder capitalism, anchored in inclusive capitalism and within the risk-return-impact trinomial.

The study presents a systemic approach that reflects the collective understanding of the urgent transformations the world needs, in addition to highlighting the challenges that lie ahead. To achieve this, we must move towards an inclusive, resilient, fair and shared economy.
