CEBDS launches CEO Guide on Transforming Food Systems

Publication brings cases, goals and practical guidelines for implementing business actions that can change the reality of the topic in the country

The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) is launching an important guide for implementing innovations in the country's food systems. Aiming to guide and engage major decision-makers in Brazilian companies, the CEO's Guide to Transforming Food Systems will be released on June 25th.

“The material has the advantage of exemplifying the success stories of companies already engaged in transformation in the country. In addition, an annex was added on the business goals already established by 16 companies, including some of the largest in the sector, such as JBS, Danone, Amaggi, Bayer and Carrefour for 2030/2050 and the sector's engagement with the UN Food Systems Summit (from the acronym in English UN FSS), which will take place in September 2021”, reinforces the president of CEBDS, Marina Grossi.

The document is inspired by original version of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), a network of business councils for sustainability of which CEBDS is part, and developed with consultancy from ERM, based on consultation with various Brazilian actors, both business and civil society, public authorities and academia.

“A change in mindset on this topic is urgent. The discussion is broad, since food systems influence the climate, biodiversity, water resources and society as a whole. It is essential to prevent the continuation of the global loss of 30% in food production observed today. That is why much more than just theory, the result of this publication is the description of 7 paths of effective actions to transform Brazilian food systems in the coming years”, adds Marina.

Leading discussions on the topic, in addition to this document, which aims to bring the holistic 2030 vision of healthy, sustainable, inclusive and resilient food systems to the decision-making of senior leaders, last month CEBDS launched the Positioning of the business sector on the sustainability of Food Systems in Brazil, alongside 14 signatory companies, aiming to improve initiatives for a better food system, taking into account that estimates are that in 30 years there will be 10 billion people in the world, who will need to be fed with nutritional quality, with diverse and sustainable production.

“Our partners in the Global Network, including CEBDS in Brazil, have an important role to play in implementing local solutions with global impact. Brazil is particularly well placed to be a leader at the intersections of the environmental and food agendas – a leadership that is reaffirmed with the launch of the CEO Guide for Transforming the Brazilian Food System. I would like to congratulate CEBDS for the important work of strengthening and representing this transformational agenda, in Brazil and abroad”, concludes Peter Bakker, who is President of the WBCSD and Special Envoy for Private Sector Engagement at the UN FSS (UN Food Systems Summit).
