Free online event on Wednesday will discuss global parameters for companies to direct investments towards biodiversity-positive initiatives
To discuss how companies can assess and report their impacts and business dependencies on nature, CEBDS (Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development) and FGV (Getulio Vargas Foundation) will hold the international event “TNFD version 0.2: business experiences and debate” on Wednesday, the 31st. The meeting will bring together representatives from multinational companies and the TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) – a global initiative that seeks to build parameters for financial institutions and companies to assess the effects of their operations on nature, and vice-versa. The event is free and open to the public, with simultaneous translation between Portuguese and Spanish.
The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) is a response to the growing need to consider biodiversity in financial and business decisions. The organization is developing a framework for companies to assess, manage and disclose their nature-related financial risks and opportunities, and this will be the central theme of the webinar.
In addition to the discussion on these standards, the webinar will also feature presentations by three companies about their experiences on the topic: Natura (Brazil), Suzano (Brazil) and Ecopetrol (Colombia).
More accurate information about the impact of business on biodiversity will enable financial institutions and companies to incorporate risks and opportunities into their strategic planning, risk management and resource allocation decisions.
“For companies, it is very important to have a risk management and disclosure structure in place so that they can report and minimize negative impacts related to nature and take advantage of the opportunities that its conservation offers. The ultimate goal is to direct global financial resources towards initiatives that have a positive impact on biodiversity,” explains Henrique Luz, technical manager at CEBDS.
The set of standards being developed by TNFD and which will be the subject of the webinar will be launched in 2023. The topic is also relevant due to the proximity of COP 15, the UN Biodiversity Conference that will be held in December, in Canada, and will approve the New Global Biodiversity Framework.
