Natal, the capital of the state with the largest installed wind power generation capacity in the country, will host the event for the first time
The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) is holding the CEBDS 2024 Seminar: Fair Energy Transition, integrated with Nature and Society, on August 28. For the first time, Natal, capital of Rio Grande do Norte – the largest wind power generator in the country, with 8 GW in operation, representing 30.20% of all wind power production in Brazil – will host the event. The meeting will be in-person, free of charge and open to the public.
With its predominantly sustainable electricity grid, Brazil has a prominent global position. In addition to the leading role played by its natural resources, its presidency of this year's G20 and next year's COP 30 will focus the international spotlight on the country.
“We need to take advantage of this moment of great global visibility to promote Brazil’s leadership on various fronts related to sustainability, such as the energy transition. Our energy matrix is cleaner than most countries, and we still have great potential for renewable sources. However, we need to be aware of the challenges of this transition – such as combining increased energy generation with the preservation of biodiversity and a positive social impact. The CEBDS Seminar will promote discussions taking into account this complexity and the role of the business sector in advancing this agenda,” highlights Marina Grossi, president of CEBDS.
The seminar will promote discussion on renewable energy sources, essential for achieving climate neutrality, with a more in-depth analysis of social impacts and care for biodiversity.
“It is an honor for Rio Grande do Norte to host the CEBDS 2024 Seminar, an event that reinforces our commitment to sustainability and a fair energy transition. Our state, a leader in wind power generation in Brazil, has a fundamental role in this process. Using our natural resources responsibly, promoting a positive social impact and preserving our biodiversity, is crucial. Discussing these topics with business leaders and experts, as provided by CEBDS, is essential to advance this agenda and consolidate Brazil’s leadership in global sustainability,” said Rio Grande do Norte Governor Fátima Bezerra.
In addition to the participation of the Governor of Rio Grande do Norte, the CEBDS Seminar will promote debate on topics such as clean energy, regenerative agriculture, energy transition, human rights and climate change with important names from the business scene, such as Veronica Coelho, CEO of Equinor Brasil; Raul Jungmann, CEO of the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM) and José Aldemir, Planning Director of Banco do Nordeste.
“Banco do Nordeste leads clean energy financing operations, investing more than R$30 billion in the last five years. We all know how important renewable energy is for the world and the strategic role of our region in the much-needed energy transition,” said José Aldemir.
The meeting will be divided into six panels, which will also address topics such as challenges and opportunities for transition from a multidimensional perspective; the regulatory issue for developing clean energy technologies; financing and the role of multilateral and development banks in mobilizing resources for sustainable projects; and the adoption of climate actions by companies to reduce risks and adverse impacts.
During the event, the 7th edition of the Female Leadership Award will also take place, which aims to recognize women leaders who contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through their initiatives and projects, in addition to honoring companies that promote equality of gender.
The CEBDS 2024 Seminar is sponsored by Banco do Nordeste, the Federal Government, Equinor, Nestlé, Vale, Eletrobras and Neoenergia, and has institutional support from ABEEólica, ABRACE, ABRAGE, Deep ESG, DevMedia, Fecomércio RN, SESC and Globo.
