Identification of basins at risk of water scarcity

Based on the results of the risks raised in the Risk and Climate Adaptation Plan, Braskem identified four basins with a high risk of water scarcity:

  • Guandu Basin, in Rio de Janeiro;
  • Piracicaba, Capivari and Jundiaí River Basin (PCJ), in São Paulo;
  • Rio dos Remédios Basin, in Alagoas and Recôncavo Norte Basins; It is
  • Inhambupe, Bahia.

Based on the results of the risks raised in the Risk and Climate Adaptation Plan, Braskem identified four basins with a high risk of water scarcity: Guandu Basin, in Rio de Janeiro; Piracicaba, Capivari and Jundiaí River Basin (PCJ), in São Paulo; Rio dos Remédios Basin, in Alagoas and Recôncavo Norte and Inhambupe Basins, in Bahia.

For each of the identified basins, an internal calculation of the price of water was carried out, considering the risk of operational and financial losses due to the restriction of grants, in order to arrive at the price that could be paid for the investment in an alternative water source that would neutralize the risk of scarcity, such as the reuse of WWTP.

Once the internal price of water was calculated, the plants inserted in risk basins developed an Action Plan to study the cost and feasibility of alternative sources such as reuse of ETE, desalination and use of groundwater. The 2018 planning provides for the definition of the best source for short to medium term investment, in order to neutralize operational and financial risks.

These actions are part of the Climate Change Adaptation Plan, which also provides for continued support for the Aquapolo project, which ensures the continuity of production at the company's plants in the ABC region, which, like the four mentioned here, also features a high risk of water scarcity.

  • Finalize in 2018 the studies of the best alternatives and finalize the Action Plans for the implementation of the selected alternatives.
  • Close in 2019 the partnership with local sanitation companies and develop the public notice for contracting the company that will provide alternative services.
  • Start in 2020 the construction of the necessary structure for the operation of the alternatives.
  • Complete the works in 2022 and start operations.
  • Use and monitoring of the volume of reused water used from 2022 onwards.
  • After the start of operations, the assessment will be based on the volume of reused water consumed and the percentage that this impacts on the company's reuse goals.
  • Braskem Goal: gradually increase the percentage of water reuse, in 2020 to 25%; in 2025 to 30%; and in 2030 to 50%.
