Spring recovery and protection program

The recovery and protection of Arrio Andréas springs is the main aspect of Philip Morris' actions in engaging its value chain with the topic of Water Security. The initiative is conducted within the scope of the Rio Pardo River Basin Management Committee, in partnership with the City of Vera Cruz (RS) and the University of Santa Cruz do Sul (UNISC). Arroio Andréas is the main source of water supply for Vera Cruz (RS). Through the Water Protector program, the company is responsible for annual payments for environmental services to agricultural farmers.

Through an initiative initiated within the scope of the Rio Pardo River Basin Management Committee and jointly with the City Hall of Vera Cruz-RS and the University of Santa Cruz do Sul (UNISC), Philip Morris Brasil is dedicated to maintaining the recovery and protection of the sources of Arroio Andréas, the main source of water supply in Vera Cruz-RS, through the Protector das Águas program, where the company is responsible for annual payments for environmental services – PES to farmers. Currently, 63 farmers are enrolled in the Project, identified by the River Basins Committee as direct influencers of water quality in Arroio Andreas.

We expanded our efforts during 2019 to another degraded area, located in the municipality of Sinimbú-RS. In partnership with UNISC, we carry out diagnoses in order to evaluate the water coming from springs in rural properties without any type of treatment or protection. Based on the diagnosis carried out, an individualized intervention project begins in the springs of each producer contemplated by the project.

Planning is carried out annually with the objective of assessing the results obtained so far with the initiatives and, based on this analysis, the programming of actions to be undertaken in the following year. The plan for the coming years is to maintain the results of preservation actions through maintenance of these initiatives, increase the number of producers reached in order to guarantee water quality for producers and their families in the region where Philip's operations are located. Morris Brasil is present.

Advances will all be measured through diagnoses carried out by the University of Santa Cruz do Sul (UNISC), which periodically monitors water quality in the regions contemplated by the initiative.
