Road to Ankara

  • Posted in 24/04/2015
While the world’s eyes will be on Paris this year, when the new climate change agreement will be discussed, another important UN conference also deserves our attention. The 12th UN Convention to Combat Desertification will be held in the Turkish capital Ankara in October 2015. World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) took advantage of the meeting in Montreux to encourage companies to seek solutions against land degradation, in addition to involving partners in the process called Road to Ankara.

The COP 12 on Desertification, which discusses environment and development for sustainable land management, aims to “create a global partnership to reverse and prevent desertification and land degradation and mitigate the effects of drought in affected areas, in order to support poverty reduction and promote environmental sustainability”. The Conference will address important issues for society as a whole and for companies, linking them to the sustainable development goals (SDGs), which will be launched in New York in September.

The WBCSD is working in partnership with the Government of Turkey to organize a robust business presence in Ankara. This is a great opportunity to organize dialogues with governments and have a collective voice in the UN process. According to the WBCSD, COP 12 is the ideal forum to showcase the solutions that business is seeking, such as restoring degraded areas and investing in natural infrastructure.

During the meeting in Montreux, companies discussed the benefits of restoring soil and implementing sustainable land management practices. This represents an excellent opportunity for companies to provide feedback on how the business sector is actively and effectively contributing to promoting sustainable development, as well as helping to strengthen the business case for action.
