Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Mechanisms (OEMs) broaden the possibilities for biodiversity conservation by recognizing areas that, even outside traditional protection categories, generate positive and lasting results for nature. This publication analyzes experiences from 13 megadiverse countries or countries with biodiversity hotspots, comparing recognition criteria, validation and reporting mechanisms, private sector and community participation, and different regulatory approaches. The study gathers international lessons that can support Brazil in building a regulatory framework for OEMs, strengthening its contribution to Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and to the conservation of 30% of terrestrial, coastal, and marine areas by 2030.
