Congress will feature names such as Marina Silva, John Kerry and Peter Bakker to outline strategies for advancing sustainable development
The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) will hold the 11th International Congress for Sustainable Development on October 18th at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), starting at 9 am. The free event, which will be broadcast live, has the motto “Brazil: protagonist of the new economy” and will bring together world-renowned leaders to discuss crucial topics on the sustainability agenda.
Some of the 28 speakers are: Marina Grossi, president of CEBDS; Marina Silva, Minister of Environment and Climate Change; John Kerry, special envoy for climate of the United States government (remote participation); Peter Bakker, president of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD); Neca Setúbal, sociologist, PhD in social psychology and president of the Tide Setubal Foundation; Felipe Arango, Technical Advisor and Pilots Lead on TNFD (Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures); and Nick Hurd, chair of the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment (remote participation).
Presidents and directors of some of the largest companies operating in Brazil and representatives of government and civil society will also be present at the debates.
“Brazil has the potential to be a leading player in the clean economy, with the potential to become the first to achieve climate neutrality. This meeting serves as an essential space to share experiences, disseminate good practices and outline strategies that drive sustainable actions in business, in addition to reaffirming companies’ commitment to the sustainability agenda,” highlights CEBDS president Marina Grossi.
This year's focus is on how to take advantage of Brazil's current position on the sustainability agenda and prepare for upcoming international conferences to be held in the country, such as the G20 meeting in 2024 in Rio de Janeiro and COP30 in 2025 in Belém. The event will feature seven discussion panels on topics such as: combating inequality; sustainable development of the Amazon; the role of innovation in promoting biodiversity; Nature-Based Solutions and pathways to climate neutrality (net zero); and the importance of sustainability reporting for the ESG journey.
One of the highlights of the congress will be the presentation of the CEBDS Women’s Leadership Award, now in its 6th edition. This award, exclusive to CEBDS members, recognizes women and companies that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and encourage the development of new female leaders. The two categories are “Member Companies” and “Women on the Board”, with a special focus on SDG 5, which seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by 2030.
This edition of Sustentável is sponsored by Petrobras, the Federal Government, Arcadis, Bradesco, Equinor, Shell, dsm-firmenich, JBS and Syngenta, with support from Deep ESG, Instituto de Cidadania Empresarial (ICE) and Sirin 2.
