Business for Climate – key messages and information about COP 26

Dear signatories of the Businessmen for Climate position,

Our commitment to sustainable development, as reflected in the document we signed, has borne much fruit and has consistently amplified the vision of the business sector. We now have 115 company CEOs and 14 presidents of industry organizations expressing our commitment to combating climate change and the need for Brazil to adopt a more ambitious stance at the next Climate Conference, COP 26, which begins in just over a week.

Therefore, we have prepared a list of key messages regarding our positioning, so that we are all aligned when talking about the document, whether at events, interviews or commitments already scheduled at COP 26.

We also bring here the schedule of events with CEBDS throughout the two weeks of the conference, a calendar that will be constantly updated. In addition, you can check out the official program of the COP 26 Presidency.

We would like to take this opportunity to present an account of the results of the dissemination of information we provided about Businessmen for the Climate. More than 150 reports have already been mapped; we have gathered some of the highlights here. We have also included an overview of the disclosures regarding CEBDS’s position in relation to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, one of the topics that should generate the most debate in Glasgow.

We also have a link to access the CEO Guide, a guidance document with the main points to be discussed at COP 26.

In a few days, we will be involved in the COP of action, as stated by the conference president, Alok Sharma. It is also the COP of ambition, and we hope to emerge from it with agreements and decisions that will guide the planet towards sustainable development. We hope that this material will contribute to our participation in this process.

Good reading!

KEY MESSAGES – ENTREPRENEURS FOR CLIMATE

  • 115 companies and 14 entities have already signed the “Entrepreneurs for Climate” position. The list of signatories includes sectors such as agribusiness, food, aviation, electrical, pharmaceutical, finance, infrastructure, logistics, pulp and paper, petrochemical, health, technology, telephony and retail;
  • Adding only the 51 companies in this group that publish their financial results, their revenue in 2019 was R$1.1 trillion;
  • In this positioning, the business sector recognizes its responsibility in the transformation to a low-carbon economy;
  • The sector is already taking action to combat climate change, with measures to reduce and offset greenhouse gas emissions, internal carbon pricing, decarbonization of operations and value chains, investments in green technologies and ambitious corporate climate neutrality targets by 2050;
  • Brazil has extraordinary comparative advantages in the race to achieve a net carbon neutral economy, drawing on our multiple natural resources and the capabilities of our people;
  • Therefore, the country must seek to play a leading role in climate negotiations, under penalty of enormous damage to the productive sector and Brazilian society;
  • At the Glasgow COP, the time is for action. One of the central points is that Article 6 of the Paris Agreement be fully regulated;
  • The full functioning of this article is strategic for Brazil, which will be responsible for a large part of the credits traded in this market;
  • It is also necessary to adopt rules that enable the development of voluntary and regulated carbon markets in Brazil;
  • We support adherence to targets based on scientific concepts and financial transparency practices, with the adoption of financing mechanisms to promote the climate transition and the comprehensive and unequivocal fight against illegal deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest and other Brazilian biomes;
  • This way, we will be able to reaffirm our international presence and build a better environmental, social and economic legacy, with less inequality and better living conditions, for this and future generations;
  • The green economy is good for everyone: for Brazilians, for businesses, for the country, for the planet. It generates jobs and income, improves air quality, makes better use of water, and reduces pollution.
