The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), an entity that represents more than 100 companies whose combined revenue is equivalent to almost 50% of Brazilian GDP, vehemently repudiates the crimes committed and the attacks on the Three Powers carried out by extremists on the afternoon of this Sunday, January 8, 2023, in Brasília.
We understand that the success of companies and businesses can only be achieved in a country where full democracy, respect for the results of the polls, institutions and the Democratic Rule of Law prevail. The sustainable development agenda, the fight against the climate emergency and the promotion of a low-carbon, prosperous and inclusive economy require an environment of respect for current laws and institutional security.
It is imperative that both the planning and execution of the attacks be investigated and that those responsible and those who financed them be identified and punished to the full extent of the law. Firm action by the State and a resounding rejection by civil society are necessary to ensure that new affronts to the Democratic Rule of Law are not repeated. CEBDS continues to uphold its historic role in defending an environment of mutual respect and ongoing dialogue between different parties, an essential condition for the full exercise of democracy.
