Water monitoring for continuous improvement

In 2021, Caramuru formalized the construction of the sustainability journey with the identification of nine material themes that connect to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), considering the vision of our main stakeholders. The materiality study carried out identified nine priority themes, with water and effluents as one of them.

Building our journey, the Caramuru Alimentos SA created a Working Group focused on Water and effluents in the year 2022. This group is made up of multidisciplinary collaborators who represent the industrial, storage and port units. The water and effluents WG works with the mission of leading the company to “Be recognized for promoting the conscious use of water and influencing the conservation of biodiversity in our value chain” by 2030”, as a work dynamic the group meets monthly and develops the work with the respective managers and boards. The company's goal for 2025 is to reduce 20% from water abstraction and reuse 70% from treated water.

The “Water monitoring for continuous improvement” Project has two main actions, which guide the whole objective:

  1. Measure water consumption by production sector in order to map consumption, mitigate waste and propose process improvements to reduce water consumption.
  2. Expand the reuse of treated effluent from ETE's within industrial processes, through improvements in the treatment of this effluent and investments in processes to make the use of this reuse water viable.

Through the unfolding of the materiality study carried out, in which the theme of Water and Effluent was identified as an important subject for Caramuru Alimentos, we started the work to define what would be our objectives for 2025 related to this material theme, based on our reality and market practices.

After this stage, we formed the WG water and effluent, composed of people working in each Unit related to the theme to seek investments in innovation, sustainable technology and processes. Through this Group, we carried out a diagnosis on water collection and effluent reuse, in which the reality of all Units was presented. With this work, water meters and hour meters were acquired at points that were not being monitored.

In one of the meetings of the WG water and effluent with the participation of the managers, the acquisition of hydrometers for measuring water consumption by productive sector was approved, with the aim of accounting for the consumption of each production process and proposing improvements to reduce this water consumption .

Another action taken was the definition of the water consumption indicator aligned with the DDO (Operational Performance Diagnosis), being a methodology for monitoring operational efficiency by all of the Unit, Management and Industrial Directors.

Caramuru Alimentos has the practice of sending a daily production report to top management and key people, with important information related to the previous day of each production process, so we include in this report the volume of daily collection carried out by each Unit.

As the last action carried out by the group, it was the elaboration of a decision-making process between the Unit's supervisions for the elaboration of robust action plans, in order to achieve the two main objectives of reducing water abstraction and increasing the volume of reused effluent.

We are currently carrying out feasibility studies for the reuse of treated effluent in processes and our action is to define a control metric for the effluent reuse indicator and standardize the collection of effluent reuse between the Units. Other related actions are learning about computerized systems for managing water consumption and reusing effluents, and studying a plant automation project with the possibility of carrying out real-time monitoring of water collection and consumption.

In order to achieve the 2025 goals of reducing 20% of water abstraction and reusing 70% of treated water, Caramuru Alimentos monitors the actions of the WG water on a monthly basis with periodic reports to industrial management. In planning for the coming years, the Units began studying the reuse of industrial effluent treated in the cooling towers, which will be our main focus, as this reuse will help achieve these two goals. Among the Units, Apucarana already reuses 100% of effluent treated in the manufacturing process.

We will be working effectively in the Technical Group to monitor actions to carry them out and seek innovation, our technologies and investment so that we can meet the goals set for 2025.

The improvement action plans are being included in the management software used by Caramuru Alimentos, in which the Sustainability Analyst, Unit Manager and Industrial Director monitor deadlines for actions and their execution.
