Use of software to assess water stress

Votorantim Cimentos incorporated the water theme as a fundamental pillar in its long-term strategy. Among the initiatives is the use of software to evaluate water stress scenarios. The objective is to outline perspectives for the years 2020, 2030 and 2040. The coverage is 100% of the locations where it has cement operations.

The ongoing action aims to incorporate the water issue as a fundamental pillar of the long-term business strategy. Although the consumption of water in the cement process is not highly relevant, the scarcity, especially in future scenarios of climate change, can indeed impact its operations. The idea of the project is to monetize the risk associated with water (scenarios of climate change and water stress) in the short, medium and long terms, and to give visibility to the magnitude of this risk to senior management. It is under evaluation whether it is a topic to be incorporated into the risk governance matrix or to be incorporated as a topic to be included in the company's strategic planning.

Votorantim Cimentos uses the Aqueduct software to understand water stress scenarios in the years 2020, 2030 and 2040 in 100% of the locations where it has cement operations. The company also compares the specific consumption of water in the different plants in search of synergies and opportunities for improvement and optimization of processes.

  • Carry out a survey of priority factories, that is, those that present the greatest current and future risk related to water;
  • Give visibility to these risks in its high leadership committees (BET – Brazilian Executive Team and GET – Global Executive team)
  • Monitor evolution of identified risks;
  • Identify opportunities for improvements to be shared between plants.

Assessment to be carried out by the sustainability area.
