For another consecutive year, CEBDS was present at Climate Week NYC, held from September 17th to 24th. For us, it was another opportunity to boost climate action, aiming for COP28, representing the voice of the Brazilian business sector and encouraging discussions for a more sustainable future.
In partnership with re.green and the Coalition Brazil Climate, Forests and Agriculture, we held the panel “Business for Nature”, on September 19th, addressing nature-based strategies for business success and the importance of their inclusion in companies’ ESG agenda. The event featured panelists Marcelo Behar, VP of Sustainability at Natura &Co; Catherine Martini, Carbon Removal at Microsoft; and Mariana Sarmiento, CEO of Terrasos, under the mediation of Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran, from The Economist.
The president of CEBDS, Marina Freitas Grossi, spoke at the opening of the panel, highlighting that it is essential for businesses to place nature and people at the center of decision-making. The Governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, was interviewed at the end of the event, providing an overview of the opportunities for Brazil when hosting COP30, in Belém.

We also held, on September 20th, the panel “Nature-Based Solutions: ways to advance business in Brazil”, with the presence of panelists Alessandra Fajardo (Bayer), Samuel Barreto (TNC Brasil), Marie Ikemoto (SEAS/RJ), Andre Ferretti (Grupo Boticário) and Patricia Daros (Vale).
The meeting brought practical examples and solutions learned, from both businesses and experts, related to Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), which play a fundamental role in putting humanity on the path to climate neutrality.
The topic was the focus of the publication “Nature-Based Solutions for Business”, published by CEBDS in 2021, in which we compiled a series of practical company cases.
To conclude CEBDS's participation in Climate Week NY, we held the webinar on September 22nd “Unlocking opportunities: private sector contributions to the green transition package in Brazil”.
The event was attended by Alessandra Fajardo, Director of Food Value Chain Partnerships – Strategy and Sustainability at Bayer, Gabriel Santamaria, Head of Sustainability at Banco do Brasil, Gustavo Fontenele, General Coordinator of Decarbonization at MDIC – Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services and moderated by the director of Nature and Society at CEBDS, Juliana Lopes.
Today, global decarbonization requires an estimated annual investment of 3 to 5 trillion dollars by 2030. Brazil has a fundamental role in this, due to its ability to attract around 3 trillion dollars in investments by 2050, becoming a power in this economy inclusive green. We have a great opportunity to leverage a sustainable development model.
