From November 30th to December 11th, Paris will host the most important event on this year's global climate agenda, COP 21, whose main objective is to discuss the global climate change agreement that is expected to come into force in 2020. Broad engagement of public and private initiatives worldwide is urgently needed to accelerate the development of low-carbon technologies, expand their use, and enable the implementation of business solutions. The Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS) is leading and participating in several initiatives leading up to COP 21, as we believe this is the best way to ensure more sustainable and prosperous economic growth for the planet.
– Low-carbon technologies (LCTPi and Coalition)
In a partnership with the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and the French government, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is focusing its efforts on engaging the business sector in the LCTPi project – Low-Carbon Technologies Partnership InitiativeThe initiative includes a series of dialogues between governments and companies, including several rounds of negotiations. In Brazil, CEBDS will host the negotiation round on October 7th in São Paulo.
The LCTPi's objective is to catalyze actions to accelerate the development of low-carbon technologies associated with Renewables, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), Biofuels, Mobility, Forests, Agriculture, Cement, and Energy Efficiency in Buildings. To engage our companies, each of these eight areas will be led by one or two CEBDS members. For example, Fibria, which expressed interest in leading the Forestry area through the initiative, Brazil, Climate, Forests and Agriculture Coalition, created at the end of 2014. The Coalition aims to establish a dialogue between the different actors of the Federal Government and contribute with solutions for the Brazilian climate, forests and agriculture agenda, based on the agreement that will be negotiated at COP 21. CEBDS makes up the Executive Secretariat of the Coalition together with companies and civil society organizations, which believe in the implementation of business solutions with a view to limiting the increase in the planet's average global temperature to 2°C.
Earlier this year, CEBDS was appointed coordinator of the initiative in Brazil We Mean BusinessThe WMB is a coalition of international organizations created to amplify the voice of business, catalyze climate action, and promote discussion of public policies that encourage low-carbon technologies. The main objective of this initiative is to call companies and governments to action for a global climate agreement, which will be discussed at the UN COP 21 in Paris. Currently, the WMB's partners in Brazil are: National Confederation of Industry (CNI), Carbon Disclosure Program (CDP), Ethos, GVCes, Global Compact, Sustainable Planet and Braskem.
