The Business Climate Initiative (BCI) has launched its position on carbon pricing mechanisms this Wednesday (21), in São Paulo. The document defends the definition of a carbon pricing methodology in Brazil, invites companies to engage in this debate and informs the government and society about its willingness to contribute to this agenda.
The IEC is formed by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (Cebds), Envolverde, GVCes, Instituto Ethos and the United Nations Global Compact Brazil Network.
The positioning highlights that, in a time of crisis, carbon pricing can help boost economic growth. At the same time, in a context of tackling the rise in global temperatures after the Paris Agreement, it can be an efficient and effective alternative to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Following COP21, when an international effort was agreed to ensure that global temperature rise does not exceed 2°C, the World Resources Institute estimated that US$5.7 trillion in annual investment will be needed by 2020 to decarbonise the economy.
