CEBDS and WBCSD bring together business leaders to plan global action for sustainability

At a dinner attended by dozens of executives, leaders launched a project to accelerate the transition to a greener economy

The president of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), Peter Bakker, and the president of the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), Marina Grossi, met with presidents and directors of large companies operating in Brazil to launch the strategy “From Dubai to Belém – and Beyond”. This is an initiative that aims to bring together the business sector, at a global level, to promote sustainable development in the coming years.

The event took place on October 18th, after the Sustainable Congress, in São Paulo, and was attended by executives representing sectors such as mining, finance, cosmetics, agriculture and energy.

During the meeting, businesspeople were called upon to build a single strategy for the productive sector to act on a global agenda. Some of the points discussed were the transition to fairer food systems, carbon markets, how to increase the scale of nature-based solutions and blended finance.

“Our idea is to promote a strong mobilization of companies operating in Brazil, via CEBDS, and worldwide, via WBCSD, to collaborate and directly drive the transition to the green economy, especially in this extremely important window of opportunity between the COP in Dubai, this year, and that in Belém, in 2025, but also thinking about legacies for the following years”, highlights the president of CEBDS.

“From Dubai to Belém – and Beyond” promises to be a robust project, especially due to the scope of its institutions: CEBDS has more than 100 members (whose combined revenues are equivalent to 50% of Brazil’s GDP) and WBCSD brings together around 200 of the largest multinational companies on the planet. Together, the councils represent more than 5,000 companies, representing an annual revenue of over US$$ 8.5 trillion.

“We know that if we are to overcome some of the climate challenges, we need initiatives that will leave a legacy for years to come. And this is a unique moment when we can bring the global business sector together for this initiative. We need buy-in and collaboration from companies,” explains Peter Bakker.

The project launch meeting was attended by the following companies: Bradesco; Braskem; Caramuru; Itaú; JBS; Mosaic; Natura; Neoenergia; Prumo Logística; Unilever; Vale; and Vibra Energia.
