In a statement, the business sector supports advances in the national biodiversity plan

CEBDS publication, signed by companies from sectors such as cosmetics, food, infrastructure and mining, aims to collaborate with the Brazilian strategy

The CEBDS (Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development) launched today, June 5, the Communiqué of the Brazilian Business Sector on the National Strategy and Action Plan for Biodiversity (EPANB) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Agreement. In the document, signed by companies from sectors such as energy, mining, food, cosmetics and infrastructure, the productive sector offers support in the construction and implementation of the national goals of the new global framework, collaborating with the proposal recently launched by the federal government.

The objective is to contribute to the construction of the Brazilian strategy for biodiversity, aiming to place nature as part of national development to create business alternatives with the forest standing and people at the center of decisions.

The support offered by the companies will take place on four different fronts: advocacy and engagement of the business sector, with the aim of raising awareness and engaging the productive sector in participating in the public consultation; support the government in articulating and mobilizing multistakeholders to prepare a concrete action plan that contributes to the implementation and fulfillment of goals; contributions to the national plan through the organization of working sessions with its associates and partner institutions to collect and consolidate contributions to the document; and support in the monitoring plan for national business-related targets, with the aim of accelerating business action to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030, as well as moving the planet toward a vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050.

“CEBDS is the only representative of the business sector with the government in the construction of the strategy, which is the action plan that the country will adopt to implement the Global Biodiversity Framework. With this, we want to help build efficient policies that lead to actions with a positive impact on nature”, explains the president of CEBDS, Marina Grossi.

In addition to releasing the communiqué, the Council recently delivered to the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, the “Letter from the Brazilian business sector on Biodiversity”, a document in which he defends the development of the strategy and the country's engagement in actions for the conservation and sustainable use of nature.

CEBDS has also defended the vision of the productive sector on the subject at UN conferences on biodiversity. In the last edition, COP15, which took place last year in Canada, one of the main points highlighted was the importance of goal 15 of the Global Framework, which deals with the disclosure of impacts and dependencies on biodiversity by companies and financial institutions, in particular large and transnational ones.

In addition to this, other targets considered fundamental are 18 and 19, which address the redirection or elimination of harmful incentives to biodiversity, at least US$ 500 billion per year; and to increase financial resources to at least US$200 billion annually for biodiversity protection actions.
